Giap Tet filmmakers

Le Trong Hieu - Producer & Director - viet.energetica@gmail.com

Born in Hanoi , Vietnam, Le Trong Hieu expresses an intense desire to tell the stories of his homeland – of the complex mechanics of rebuilding his nation following the War.

With a BA in English from Hanoi University of Foreign Studies, Hieu moved to New Zealand in 2003 with his New Zealand partner. He commenced a Law degree in 2004, however, soon realised the confines of the legal profession were not exciting. Following a move to Auckland in 2005, he pursued opportunities to study film and was accepted into the South Seas Film and Television Production Course.

Hieu expresses a strong vision to become a filmmaker able to tell stories of his homeland, Vietnam – a country of proud people, hidden charms and complex history. While still based in New Zealand, Hieu has established his business, Viet-Kiwi Energetica Productions to operate in both Vietnam and New Zealand, to provide a base for him to move forward to realise his vision.

Viet-Kiwi Energetica Productions Ltd tells stories of ordinary Vietnamese people in extraordinary situations.

Giap Tet film

Giap Tet

“Giap Tet” (Close to Tet) is a film about people who live in the Middle Alluvial Plain of the Red river, Hanoi, Vietnam. Most of their income comes from collecting rubbish, which is just enough for them to survive. The film production was finished just few days before Tet Nguyen-Dan (Vietnamese New Year).

Unlike most Vietnamese documentary films, in which the realities were partially explained, “Giap Tet” has a new approach in its simple and real storytelling about the reality of life in Vietnam.

The Vietnamese filmmakers, Nguyen Manh Ha and Le Trong Hieu do not try to create huge bitter contrast pictures of the rich and the poor. They simply let the characters naturally share their deepest thoughts, hopes and secret stories that they have never had the chance to share. Their stories are so powerful that they will leave the audience with lots of things to reflect on after watching the film.
